Seznamte se! 26. 5. 2009
Claire Greaney
Do Philadelphie jste jela obhajovat své loňské vítězství a potvrzovat své kvality z letošního All Ireland. S jakým pocitem jste odlétala do USA? Připouštíte si možnost, že nevyhrajete?
First of all I would like to congratulate you on your victory at the last World championships in Philadelphia in category Ladies 18-19. You went to defend your success and confirm your quality from All Ireland championship this year. What were your feelings when you went to USA? Would you admit the possibility, you might not win?
You can never go and expect to win. Of you expect to win, there is no point in even being in dancing anymore because the excitement and nerves are gone but if you don‘t believe you can do it, it’s never going to happen either. Going over to the worlds, because I was returning to retain my world title and had the all-Ireland title, the pressure is a little more intense because everybody is expecting you to be the best, naturally you don’t want to disappoint. I was exited because it was in America and I knew that I had worked hard and knew I had a chance but was extremely nervous because anything can happen on the say and you may just be unlucky. It‘s good to have nerves though because they give you that little bit of adrenaline boost.
2.Pamatujete si, jaké to bylo, když jste poprvé vyhrála světový šampionát?
Do you remember what it was like, when you first won the Worlds? Is it harder to reach the first position then defend it?
For me, it was much harder to reach it. I had been waiting years and years for my first World Title. I had come so close so many times and really just thought that my day was never going to come. When the marks came out that day and I knew that I had won, I‘ve never felt anything like it. Just the excitement and sheer relief to know that I‘ve achieved everything I‘ve worked for and nobody can take that away from me.
3.Jak probíhají vaše přípravy na soutěže? Zvládnete vše během pravidelných tréninků nebo ještě vedle toho cvičíte doma ve volném čase? Kolik hodin týdně (zhruba) vám tak tancování zabere?
How does your preparation for feisanna go? Do you manage everything during the regular classes or do you practise at home in your free time as well? How many hours (roughly) per week do you spend on dancing?
When it comes to practising for the worlds and All-Irelands and all the feisanna coming up to both class just isn‘t enough. I try to practise everyday, even if it was 20 mins, I know every little counts.
Do you do any other activity which would help you to improve your dancing style (for e.g.: ballet or contemporary dance, etc.)? Do you find yourself more engaged with your health care since you Irish dancing? Do you follow any special rehabilitation or do you use any health gadgets?
I don‘t do any other style of dancing at all, I never had, more because I didn’t have the time or the interest really. Irish Dancing was always the most important thing because I just loved it so much. Throughout my school years I played a lot of basketball or running track but now that I‘m in college, I didn’t keep them up. I don‘t have any special diets or health rehabilitation at all. I don’t have the time to do anything else but dancing but I feel I couldn’t get any better exercise than dancing itself. With diets and eat pretty much whatever I want but I find coming up to competitions I‘m not able to eat junk food. I think when the nerves start to kick in, I‘m just not able to stomach it.
What is your relation to your dance teachers like? How big is the role of trust? Do you get a chance to enforce your own opinion (for e.g. to quality of steps)? Do you ever get a word of criticism from your teacher’s side or everything is said more or less in positive way?
I have a very close relationship with my teachers as does everyone else in our school as I‘m sure you‘ve noticed. Throughout the years they have gone through the highs and lows of everything with me and I know that I can trust them with anything when it comes to my dancing career. I can’t imagine dancing for anybody else. With my steps, I have a huge input. A lot of my steps I may have made up myself but I would always get their opinion before I would put it into my dance. Some steps, we would get together and it would be a joint effort. This is fantastic because then any of the steps put into my dance are steps that I like and I know I will comfortable doing.
How much is your family involved in your dancing life? Do you find it difficult to combine your studies with dancing?
I have a very close relationship with my mother so she has always had a major interest in the dancing. She comes to every competition me and always there to encourage me. My dad also loves my dancing but he wouldn’t be as involved. He is just the supportive dad who can never understand why I don’t win sometimes……..even though he might only see me dance in the whole competition. My brother is very supportive aswell.
7.Vědí vaše spolužačky o této vaší aktivitě? A vědí, jak jste úspěšná? Jak to hodnotí?
Do your school mates know about this activity of yours? Do they know that you are so good at it? What do they think about it?
All my school friends know or knew that I dance but I never really made it a big deal. They were very supportive of it but like most people not involved they really just never understood the achievement.
Do you have any other hobby apart from the Irish dancing? Do you ever go to disco club or any ball? What’s your opinion on Irish set-dancing?
I like to go out the odd time with friends and have a bit of fun but it’s not something that I just have to do. I would much prefer to go to the cinema or rent a dvd. Just depends on the mood I‘m in. With Irish-dancing, I appreciate the technique to it and how people can be interested in it but for me, it’s just not something that interests me.
Do you remember the moment, when Irish dancing as free time tentative activity turned into a serious strong-minded interest to be the best as you can be?
I don’t remember that at all. I have been dancing for 15 years now but I don’t feel that all of sudden, the teachers saw potential in me and started working me. I always stayed going at my own steady pace and knew what I had to do. Really I think when I turned about 16 I think it dawned on me that extra work was essential if I wanted to get where I wanted but I feel the fact that I wasn‘t pushed when I was younger had stood to me as I got older. I find I appreciate every win so much more now as I know now that all my hard work paid off.
10.Jaké máte taneční plány do budoucna? Neusiluje o vás nějaká taneční show?
What is your plan in the future? Can we expect to receive in our hands contact card with your name, which will be followed by TCRG or even ADCRG abbreviation? Isn’t there any dancing show seeking for you?
At the moment, I‘ve no idea what is in store. I would love to tour just for the experience but that won’t happen while im at college. I stay competing another few years to get me through college. I‘m involved in Trad on the Prom which is a fabulous show that runs for 5 months in the summer and it‘s in Galway so I couldn‘t ask for anything better.
